Do the Mayakoba Staff Speak English?

Yes, most if not all staff employed at the resort speak English.  This is a refreshing difference from most other resorts, even higher end resorts often have few staff who speak English.  it has a well selected staff who speak both Spanish and English.

What is the landscape and climate like around the Fairmont Mayakoba area?

This Fairmont property is located within the mangrove forest that lines the white sand beaches of the Riviera Maya coastline. The Red Mangrove forests that make up Mayakoba form a thatch work of plants and trees that hold the surrounding Riviera Maya coastline together. Coastlines are constantly shifting as a result of weather & geologic forces and the Mayakoba's mangrove forest plays a important role in stabilizing the coastal terrain during hurricanes and other forces of nature.

The mangroves around the resort play an important role in cleaning the waste water and natural runoff from the entire area and are the natural habitat for many indigenous and protected species or birds, mammals, and reptiles.

The Fairmont Mayakoba is also regarded as a great place to go bird watching. The 'El Camaleon' Greg Norman designed 18 hole golf course on the Mayakoba property has been designated by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System as a "Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary" since 2006. Each morning and evening you can listen to the rich sounds of the thousands of birds living among the mangroves.

The golf course is managed by Fairmont Resorts & Hotels which means that it is also part of their 'Greening our Greens' program. This program includes initiatives that:

• Uses plants that are resistant to drought and using natural species that are indigenous to the resort property.

• Testing and controlling all water used for irrigation and managing how the irrigation waste water flows through the area.

• Around the golf course, all trees living and dead are left in their natural state to optimize habitat for birds and animals. Numerous iguanas can be found among the golf course's rocky features as you play through.

The Fairmont Mayakoba is full of beautiful water canals often used by guests to move between different areas of the resort. From these canals guests can see the exquisite plants and animals that live in the mangrove forest.  This vast and pristine area is both beautiful and sometimes overwhelming. The grounds are large and winding which means walking between venues can be exhausting.

There are golf carts driven by Fairmont staff roaming the grounds transporting guests around the property but availability is sometimes sporadic and you may end up waiting a while for one to appear.

In 2007, the The Fairmont Mayakoba received the 'Environmental Hotel of the Year', awarded by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts.
